UTHSC News: Chattanooga Research Team Plays Leading Role in International Study of AI-Guided Colonoscopy System

Researchers at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine at Chattanooga were part of a large international multicenter study just published in the Lancet Digital Health journal. The study evaluated the effectiveness of a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) system for polyp detection in screening and surveillance colonoscopy.

Arslan Kahloon, MD, associate professor and program director of the Gastroenterology fellowship, is an author of the paper. Giuseppe Pizzorno, PhD, PharmD, associate dean for Research and chief research officer at Erlanger Health System, was the Chattanooga team leader on the study.

Although colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for early detection and removal of precancerous polyps, a significant number of polyps may be missed during the procedure. Missing lesions are a serious concern, as this can lead to colon cancer. It is estimated that at least 50% of all colorectal cancers after colonoscopy develop from them.

The newly published study was conducted over 14 months, from 2020 to 2022, at 10 major medical centers, with 31 endoscopists and 952 patients enrolled. Erlanger Health System was the primary site for patient recruitment, working in collaboration with other US centers such as Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Metro Health Medical Center, as well as centers in Germany, the Netherlands and Israel.

The study proved the effectiveness of a new MAGENTIQ-COLO™ computer system. The results showed that using this AI-guided system increases the adenoma detection rate by 7% and decreases the adenoma miss rate by 19%. These numbers are high enough to be strongly associated with a reduction in colorectal cancer incidence and patient mortality.
