When Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visits Ayodhya to attend the ‘Pujan bhumi’ on 5 August, the event will also mark the culmination of a long battle launched by the mahants (high priests) of Gorakhnath Math (monastery) in Gorakhpur for the construction of Temple Ram.
Located 137 kilometers east of Ayodhya, Gorakhnath Mathematics has been at the center of the Ram Temple movement since British rule. She played a key role in the Ayodhya movement under three mahants -Digvijay Nath, Avaidyanath and Yogi Adityanath.
Digvijay Nath, who became a mahant in 1935, not only made mathematics a center of right-wing political activity, but also became a guiding light of the temple movement. After joining the Hindu Mahasabha in 1937, he began mobilizing the Hindu community for the Ram temple in Ayodhya. He led a volunteer team to Ayodhya in 1949, held a meeting with Raja e Balrampur, Pateshwari Prasad Singh and Swami Karpatri Maharaj, a prominent spectator.
The Akhil Bhartiya Ram Rajya Parishad party was navigating at the time.
On the intrusive night of December 22-23, 1949, when the Ram idol was placed in the then controversial structure, Digvijay Nath was present in Ayodhya. He motivated the volunteers to start the prayers. Although the state government instructed district judges to remove the idol, he refused to execute the order, stating that the move could lead to municipal violence in the area.

Pradeep Rao, a teacher at Gorakhpur Department of Wealth Graduate College who has done research on the Nath tradition of Goraknath Monasticism and Mathematics, said: “Placing the idol inside the mosque has worked as a catalyst in the movement of the Ram temple, mobilizing worshipers “and sadhus to take the fight for the temple on the street, the court and the Parliament. Until his death in 1969, Digvijay Nath gave impetus to the movement of the Ram temple,” he said.
The other Mahani, Avaidyanath, continued the movement to the temple of Ram. In 1984, he constituted the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mukti Yagya Summit to bring all Hindu and Hindu organizations associated with the movement of the Ram temple to a single platform. He organized a march from Sitamarhi in Bihar to Ayodhya for the liberation of the Ram temple in September 1984. He urged people to vote for that party or leader who supported the construction of the Ram temple, Rao said.

At the Dharam Sansad (religious conference) organized in Udupi, Karnataka, on October 31, 1985, Avaidyanath and Ramchandra Das Paramhans, a digambar Akhara mahogany, demanded the opening of the mosque blockade so that the pious could offer prayers to the idol. A committee known as the Akhil Bhartiya Sangharsh Summit was set up to give a boost to the movement.
On February 1, 1986, when the then Faizabad district judge issued the order to open the lock, Avaidyanath was present in Ayodhya.
At a rally in Delhi on September 22, 1989, Avaidyanath announced shilanyas’ presence in Ram Janmabhoomi on November 9, 1989. Later, at a meeting in Haridwar, he announced that sadhus would visit Ayodhya to begin construction. of the Ram temple.
The then union house minister, Buta Singh, and then-Uttar Pradesh chief Narayan Dutt Tiwari urged him to postpone the program. A few years later, a delegation led by him met with then-Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao in the early 1990s.
An announcement was made at the sansad dharam held in Delhi on October 30, 1992 that kar sewa for the Ram temple in Ayodhya would begin on December 2, 1992.
Inspired by the temple movement, Yogi Adityanath, a fresh graduate, then known as Ajay Singh Tail, visited Gorakhpur in 1992 to meet Avaidyanth. He gave up family life to become a monk of Nath Panth.
He became a disciple of Avaidyanath and began attending Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mukti Yagya Summit meetings chaired by his guru. Parishad leaders Vishwa Hindu, Bajrang Dal, Hindu Mahasabha, as well as the sadhus of Ayodhya, attended these meetings.
The task of organizing the meetings was entrusted to the young Adityanath who proved his gentleness by inviting sadhus, heads of various Hindu religious orders, and scholars from all over the country. Impressed with Adityanath’s skills and diligence, Mahant Avaidyanth named him his successor in 1996. Soon, he established himself as a Hindutva fire leader.
Controversial issues such as the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, the uniform civil code, the ban on cow slaughter and the anti-conversion campaign topped the agenda of these meetings organized east of the UP.
In 1998, Mahant Avaidyanth decided to turn to active politics. He announced that Adityanath will oppose Lok Sabha elections from the prestigious Gorakhpur Lok Sabha country that Avaidyanath had won four times.
In 1997-98, when the Ram temple movement began to lose its luster in other parts of the UP, Adityanath kept the issue alive in the east UP by organizing the Vishwa Hindu Mahasammelan and the Hindu Sangam Virat in Gorakhpur and neighboring districts.
Representatives of 970 Hindu organizations and 10,000 sadhus were invited to the meetings. VHP leader Ashok Singhal also extended support to Adityanath.
In 1998, Adityanath was elected to Lok Sabha from Gorakhpur. He erected the Ram temple as well as the Hindutva affairs in the House.
In 2002, when Adityanath’s relationship with the BJP leadership sank, he not only activated the Mahasabha Hindu east of the UP, but also started the Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV) to mobilize youth for the Ram temple movement. Soon, these organizations spread their wings to the central and eastern UP.
After being appointed Prime Minister on March 19, 2017, Yogi Adityanath has visited Ayodhya several times. The state government declared Ajodhya a municipal corporation, launched projects to promote tourism and facilities for pilgrims, organized Deepotsav on the threshold of Diwali in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The state government also announced that a 200-meter-high statue of Lord Ram will to be installed on the banks of the Saryu River in Ayodhya.
Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Adityanath visited Ajodhya on March 25, when Ram Llalla’s idol (baby Ram) was moved to a new prefabricated structure. He went there again on July 25 to review preparations for Bhumi Pujan and inspect other projects that are underway in various parts of Ayodhya.
