Amnesty International demands justice for slain Honduran environmental activist – JURIST
Amnesty International MOVED The Government of Honduras to ensure justice for the murder of Berta Cceres on Monday. Cceres was a well-known figure in environmental and indigenous activism and leader of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), she was killed in 2016 in her home in Intibuc, Honduras by gunmen.
Amnesty International's Deputy Americas Director for Research Astrid Valencia said:
Eight years after Berta Cceres' murder, her family continues to face an incomplete judicial process that needlessly perpetuates their anguish. It is imperative that Honduran authorities take decisive action to end the cycle of impunity in this case
According to Amnesty International, the killing was linked to Cceres' role in the fight against the construction of the Agua Zarca hydroelectric dam project and its cascading effect on the Lenca, an indigenous group living in the area where the dam would be built. The inhabitants of Lênca considered the construction of the dam a threat to their land, water and way of life and therefore have been protesting against the dam project since 2006, which received strong support from Cceres.
The Agua Zarca project, planned to be built on the Gualcarque River, was being built by the Honduran electric company Desarrollos Energticos (DESA). The killing of an indigenous community leader in a protest against the project led to the withdrawal of DESA's partners, the Chinese company Sinohydro and the International Finance Corporation, an affiliate of the World Bank. The project's financiers, the Dutch development bank FMO and FinnFund, a Finnish financial corporation, eventually withdrew from the project after Cceres' murder.
Cceres' long fight for justice finally saw the light of day when former DESA manager David Castillo, who was convicted of her murder in 2021, was sentenced to about 23 years in prison in 2022. Moreover , seven people convicted of killing Cceres were sentenced to 30 and 50 years in prison.
Ceres won The prestigious Goldman Environment Prize in 2015 for her “grassroots campaign” against the project that did injustice in many ways. The UN urged Honduras to protect human rights defenders after Cceres' death. The place was reported as the deadliest country for environmental activists by Global Witness in 2017.
