A tentative agreement was reached for Canada's border workers, averting possible labor action
A tentative agreement has been reached for more than 9,000 workers at the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), avoiding possible industrial action later this week.
The workers are represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and the Customs and Immigration Union (CIU).
“Our bargaining team has been working around the clock to secure the best contract for our members, and this tentative agreement is a testament to their incredible work and dedication,” said PSAC National President Sharon DeSousa.
A ratification vote will be scheduled in the coming days.
After that, the full details of the tentative pact are expected to be revealed.
“I am proud of the solidarity our members have shown over the past two years of negotiations,” said CIU National President Mark Weber.
Tuesday's agreement follows a second extension of labor action announced on Monday that could have seen it continue on Friday at all ports of entry.
The two sides have been in mediation since last week.
The workers have been without a contract for two years.
“This tentative agreement shows that the best deals are always reached at the negotiating table,” Treasury Board President Anita Anand said in a statement.
“Border enforcement officers are critical to the safety and security of our borders, and this tentative agreement recognizes the importance of that work while remaining reasonable for taxpayers.”
Among other demands, the union was seeking pay parity with other law enforcement agencies.
Concerns raised with business groups and travelers as the deadlines for the work action approach.
