Blinken calls on Hamas to accept Gaza ceasefire plan
TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says the U.N. Security Council's vote in favor of a U.S.-backed proposal for a Gaza ceasefire has made it “As clear as possible” that the world supports the plan. He again called on Hamas to accept it and said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had reaffirmed his commitment to the proposal. Blinken spoke on Tuesday during his latest visit to the region, his eighth since the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel that sparked the war. Hamas also welcomed the Security Council vote and says it supports the broad outline of the deal, but wants assurances that it will be implemented.

BLANTYRE, Malawi (AP) – Malawi's president says the vice president and nine others have died in a plane crash. The wreckage of the military plane carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima was found in a mountainous area in the north of the country after a search that lasted more than a day. President Lazarus Chakwera says there are no survivors. The plane disappeared on Monday morning while making a 45-minute flight from the capital of the southern African country. Air traffic controllers told the plane not to attempt a landing at Mzuzu Airport due to bad weather and poor visibility and asked it to turn back.
At least 49 dead, 140 missing after migrant boat capsizes off Yemen coast
CAIRO (AP) – A U.N. agency says a boat carrying migrants has sunk off the coast of Yemen, killing at least 49 people and leaving 140 others missing. The International Organization for Migration says the boat was carrying approximately 260 Somalis and Ethiopians from Somalia's northern coast across the Gulf of Aden when it capsized on Monday off Yemen's southern coast. He says 71 people have been rescued and that search efforts were ongoing on Tuesday. Among the dead are 31 women and six children. Yemen is a major route for migrants from East Africa and the Horn of Africa trying to reach Gulf countries for work, despite Yemen's nearly decade-long civil war.
