The government aims to undermine workplace safety

The Government's announcement of a roadshow consultation on health and safety at work is a smokescreen for its plan to scrap regulations that keep workers safe.

More workers will die as a result of this move – it's that simple, says Teanau Tuiono, the Green Party's workplace relations and safety spokesman.

The Government's decision to cut funding to the tune of $10 million from an already understaffed Worksafe NZ was the start. The main path will be sweeping cuts to regulations designed to ensure that jobs are safe.

The government says it is cutting red tape, but it is really cutting workers' rights that have been fought for for generations. All is well until a petrol pump blows up because some gas canisters have not been stored properly, due to slipping safety regulations and standards.

Everyone deserves to work in an environment where their safety is respected and their rights are protected. Workers are the backbone of our economy and deserve much better than a government that just doesn't care.

We need to adequately resource the labor inspectorate as well as Worksafe to ensure we have strong health and safety practices.

The stark reality is that every 15 minutes someone is seriously injured in a workplace incident. Up to 17 people die each week from work-related health problems. This costs our economy over $4 billion a year.

In New Zealand, almost three times as many people die at work as in the UK. Similarly, our rate of serious workplace injuries is 20 per cent higher than in Australia. This governments anti-worker agenda will cause us to slide even further back.

Statistics also show that Mori and Pasifika are far more likely to die or be injured in their workplace, so once again these communities will be disproportionately affected by this reckless regime.

We must stand up for what is right. The safety of working people must be protected, says Teanau Tuiono.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
