University of Guelph says it's looking at housing options for first-year students after criticism from mayor
The University of Guelph says it is exploring options that could result in more off-campus housing for the fall semester.
Friday's comments were in response to Mayor Cam Guthrie's statement Thursday chastising the university for admitting roughly 1,300 more students than it has room for this fall.
Statistics from the Ontario Universities Application Center show that the University of Guelph has 7,849 confirmed offers of admission from students, an increase of 52.6 per cent over 2023.
In an emailed statement from Jessamine Luck, a spokeswoman for the University of Guelph, the university said it accepted more students this year “to increase the financial sustainability of the university and support academic and research excellence.”
In anticipation of higher enrollments, the statement said it increased the number of living spaces in North, South, East and West campus residences.
The university's statement said that in addition to space in a former hotel it leases on Gordon Street, it would seek community partnerships to expand off-campus spaces for the fall.
Potential impact on the community
In Guthrie's statement Thursday, he said the enrollment numbers would cause housing costs to rise, “making it more difficult not only for students trying to find housing, but for current residents and newcomers to Guelph and individuals from others who are already struggling to find shelter in our community.”
The university's statement, however, contradicted that and said “students contribute significantly to the Guelph economy and are active in their local community through volunteer work, community partnerships and other civic endeavors.”
The university's statement also noted that the school is the second largest employer in the city and the administration believes its presence enhances the Guelph community by making it “a vibrant and attractive place to live for all residents.”
Ontario students were told on June 3 if they were awarded a place in residence or if they are on a waiting list.
On June 5, the university's website was updated to say “residence demand has exceeded our capacity” and there is now a waiting list for a place on campus.
All international students and out-of-province students starting school this summer or fall are guaranteed housing.
