US Navy rescues crew from ship hit by Houthis > United States Navy > News
The Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned bulk carrier M/V Tutor was struck by an Iran-backed Houthi Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) while sailing in international waters of the Southern Red Sea on June 12. The attack caused severe flooding and damage to the engine room. A civilian sailor remains missing.
A helicopter from Helicopter Sea Strike Team (HSM) 74 transported 24 civilian sailors from Tutor to the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58). From there, helicopters from Helicopter Sea Combat Team (HSC) 7 transported the group to the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). After the medical check-up at IKE, the sailors were left ashore for further care.
“It is humbling to watch the Strike Group provide assistance and rescue the crew of the M/V Tutor,” said Adm. Marc Miguez, commander, IKECSG, Carrier Strike Group 2. “We are always prepared to help; it's the right thing to do.”
“Despite these senseless attacks on innocent sailors just doing their job, the crew of the Philippine Sea is ready to help maintain the safety of life at sea, always,” said Captain Steven Liberty, the commanding officer of the Philippine Sea.
On June 13, HSM-74 aircraft from the Philippine Sea medically evacuated a critically injured civilian sailor from the M/V Verbena to a nearby partner force vessel for medical attention. The Ukrainian-owned, Palau-flagged Verbena was sailing in the Gulf of Aden when it was hit by two anti-ship cruise missiles fired from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen.
