Madhavan Nair Medical College founder professor retires | FIU news

The first faculty hire at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine is hanging up his lab coat. After nearly half a century as a biomedical researcher, the last 18 at FIU, University Distinguished Professor Madhavan Nair is retiring.

Nair leaves with a “sense of accomplishment having worked with excellent faculty and administrators.” There were many other outstanding achievements, including over $25 million in career funding and more than 300 publications.

An internationally recognized expert in nanotechnology and HIV research, Nair was the first FIU researcher to win a prestigious MERIT award from the National Institutes of Health, which recognizes outstanding competence and productivity in research.

“As Dr. Nair begins a well-deserved retirement, we celebrate a distinguished career that has left a lasting legacy. His breakthrough discoveries and innovations will undoubtedly continue to improve outcomes for patients battling diseases such as AIDS and Alzheimer's and encourage further scientific exploration,” said Dean of Medicine Dr. Juan Cendan.

In August 2006, just months after Governor Jeb Bush signed Florida Statute 1004.385 authorizing a new college of medicine at FIU, Nair was the first faculty member recruited. “The NIH referred me to the then Provost [Ronald] Berkman and he nominated me,” Nair said.

At the fledgling Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, Nair became the founding chair of the Department of Immunology and served as associate vice president of nanomedicine, associate dean of biomedical research and director of the NeuroImmune Pharmacology Institute.

In the nearly two decades since then, Nair has authored 170 publications at FIU, edited two scientific books, and earned 17 US patents. An additional patent is pending. In 2019, he was named a member of the National Academy of Inventors.

Nair's career began in his native India, where he received his Ph.D. in cancer immunology from the Tata Memorial Cancer Center at the University of Bombay. He also trained at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He later joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan. He then worked in the Department of Medicine and Microbiology at SUNY Buffalo State University as professor and director of research in allergy and immunology. He is a member of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. It may be less known that Nair is also a certified clinical nutritionist and fellow of the American College of Nutrition.

to guide drugs to cross the blood-brain barrier. August 2012.

Here, the retired scientist discusses his career and offers advice for young investigators:

What inspired you to pursue a research career?

There is a very high incidence of oral cancer in people addicted to chewing tobacco in some parts of India. My research focused primarily on enhancing the innate immune response to prevent cancer metastases in these patients. This later led to the hypothesis that substance abuse played a major role in the emergence of HIV incidence and progression to AIDS. Thus, we established a direct link between drug abuse and HIV infection and AIDS. Since the HIV virus resides in the brain and drugs cannot access the brain due to the blood-brain barrier, we developed nano-technological approaches to deliver HIV drugs to the brain.

What do you consider to be your most important contribution to your field?

    • Early report of decreased natural killer (NK) cell activity in HIV patients
    • Stimulation of the immune response in HIV patients with IL-2 to resist HIV infection
    • The association of substance use and HIV incidence
    • Delivering HIV drugs to the brain using nanotechnology

What advice would you give to young researchers entering the field?
Work hard.

Nair's last day at FIU is June 28. His retirement plans include a pilgrimage to Hindu temples in India.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
