The International African American Museum welcomes nearly 200,000 visitors in an open year

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – After 20 years of planning, the International African American Museum is marking the end of its first year since opening its doors.

During that first year, the museum saw 187,657 visitors, five rotating exhibitions and 7,148 annual memberships.

I think our engagement levels were far beyond what we expected. Of course, we wanted to open the doors and we really knew that people were excited, says CEO Dr. Tanya Matthews.

The museum contains a collection of indoor exhibits of historical objects and works of art, as well as films and interactive experiences. It also features free gardens on the ground level of the historic Gadsdens Pier.

I think as the next year goes on, we have a little more confidence in how we can activate our space and how creative we can be in our space. We've learned how to activate our east and west courtyards with everything from luxury cocktail parties, to fashion shows of young designers, have been in the space with us. We use our classroom space, which we now know we need more of, because apparently adults want to take the same classes that young people want to take, says Matthews.

The museum's five rotating exhibits came from long planning for the opening.

I think both the visitors and our members and our donors have realized: Oh my God, there's going to be something new tomorrow, says Matthews.

While Matthews says that many changes in a year are likely not the norm, the museum will always change and evolve by telling stories as they come, through a variety of mediums.

After 20 years of planning, we had a lot we wanted to get out of the gate with. They were especially excited about our newest changing traveling exhibit, Follow the North Star, because we were able to include some of the stories from our genealogy center that our visitors had left with us in this exhibit. So we incorporated that into the exhibit. And I think people are very excited, says Matthews.

Matthews says staff, volunteers and visitors have conversations every day about the museum experience.

I think one of the most empowering conversations we've had with museum visitors is how inspired they feel when they leave the museum. A lot of them say we understand the story and we knew we wanted to learn some tough, tough stories, but we never expected to walk away inspired by resilience, by triumph, says Matthews.

The North Star exhibition runs until November 3. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and staff recommend purchasing tickets in advance. online.
