Taking time to honor parents for a great start | News, Sports, Jobs
I take every opportunity to praise the beginning in life provided by my loving and caring parents, Bill and Pearl (Moore) Wentz. But I left the last opportunities to honor them separately, on Mother's Day in May and Father's Day in June. Instead, now in July, with Parents' Day on the national calendar for July 28, it's time to pause to acknowledge the critical contributions they made to improving the lives of my older brother and sister and me.
Louisa Pearl Moore was born on September 6, 1893, on a farm in Cove outside Roaring Spring. Mom was the last of four daughters born to Mary and Matthew Moore.
My mother met my father when they both worked at the Bare Paper Mill in Roaring Spring. They were married in 1916.
In 1927, my family moved from Roaring Spring to Hollidaysburg so my father would be closer to his new railroad job in Altoona. I was born in 1934.
I grew up as an only child because my brother started his family life when I was very young and my sister was killed by a drunk driver in a car accident. Mom was devastated by the tragedy, devastated, and took years to heal.
I was a teenager when my family moved back to Cove in 1947.
It was after I started classes at Morrison Cove High School that life accelerated and personal decisions were made that would shape the rest of my life.
These decisions included academics, girlfriends, boyfriends, athletics, behavior, finances, and career choices. Mom's deft guidance was crucial.
On June 14, 1965, while tending to a rose bush near her home, Mom collapsed and died of a severe stroke. She was almost 72 years old.
My father, William Wentz, was born to Elizabeth and John Henry Wentz in 1897 in a log cabin on Ore Hill, near what is now the Iron Masters Golf Course. He was educated through the fourth grade, which was all the formal education available in the one-room schoolhouse he attended.
In 1917, he became a car repairer in the Pennsylvania Railroad shops in Altoona and the family moved from Loud Spring to Hollidaysburg, where I was born.
The father took great pride in providing for his family. “I paid all my bills on time, even during the Depression when you were born,” he boasted. “Dr. Andrews was paid in cash for your delivery, to his satisfaction.” We always had a car and a hot meal every day.
My sister was killed in a car accident in 1942. I was seven years old. I saw my parents experience terrible anguish and grief. It was Dad who maneuvered my mother out of depression.
He was strong, patient and caring.
My father challenged me to “think big” and paid for my early education at Penn State, nagging me enough about poor grades to secure my graduation.
After my mother died, my father married a wonderful woman, Rebecca Burns, the following year. Unfortunately, he collapsed while taking a shower in 1969 and was mostly confined to a wheelchair until his death in 1976.
My stepmother made his life pleasant and bearable over the last few years.
