Foreign Secretary Alicia Brcena promotes sustainable and inclusive economic development at APEP Ministerial | Secretary of Foreign Relations Gobierno
- Secretary of State Alicia Bárcena participated today in the Ministry of the American Partnership for Economic Prosperity.
- Mexico, in collaboration with Chile, the United States and Uruguay, is organizing a workshop on international best practices for the development of a national hydrogen strategy roadmap.
Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alicia Bárcena participated today in the American Partnership for Economic Prosperity (APEP) Ministry held in Washington DC, where she reaffirmed Mexico's commitment to promote sustainable economic development and prosperity in the region.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken chaired the meeting, which included APEP foreign ministers from Barbados, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Peru and Uruguay, as well as Canadian International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen and Chilean Under Secretary of Labor Foreign Gloria de la Fuente González.
In her speech, Secretary Bárcena emphasized that, as President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has stated, Mexico seeks to expand the prosperity it has achieved with the United States and Canada throughout the hemisphere. “We want a development plan that transforms the hemisphere into one that is more resilient, integrated and prosperous. We want to achieve this with equity and create job opportunities to address the structural causes of migration.”
She said, “Promoting the region's economic growth must be a priority, especially in a regionalizing world, where each region chooses interregional projects … In America, we must move forward with a pragmatic, de-ideological approach to value chains in areas such as conductors, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure and agriculture really developed.”
Secretary Barcena also emphasized the importance of promoting clean energy and highlighted Mexico's active role in the Clean Hydrogen Working Group. She said Mexico, with the support of Chile, the United States and Uruguay, is coordinating a workshop on international best practices to develop a national hydrogen strategy roadmap. This initiative aims to promote national hydrogen strategies across the region through strategic partnerships.

Secretary Bárcena was accompanied to the meeting by a delegation made up of the Chief for North America Roberto Velasco Álvarez, the Ambassador of Mexico to the US Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, the Director General of Global Economic Promotion Rodrigo Morales Castillo and the Director General of Political Affairs for the Americas North Cristina Planter Riebeling.
On behalf of the Government of Mexico, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirms its commitment to promote inclusive regional economic development to create more equal societies.
