The provincial government is advising Labrador City residents that the evacuation order issued on Friday, July 12, 2024, will be phased out over the coming days.
This gradual return will allow Labrador City residents to return home in a safe and orderly manner.
During the next 48 hours, only identified essential workers and their families will be allowed to return to Labrador City early. This includes essential staff identified by the Labrador West Health Centre, the City of Labrador City, the IGA grocery store and Rio Tinto. Those identified employees who are considered essential by their employers must be prepared to present identification when they travel.
To determine if your employer has considered you an essential worker, call 709-729-3830 or 1-833-845-0775. The hotlines will be available daily from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM NDT.
The Royal Newfoundland Army and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, supported by Newfoundland and Labrador Land Search and Rescue, will control traffic along the Trans-Labrador Highway (Route 500) to ensure access is allowed only for identified essential workers.
The evacuation order will be officially lifted for all residents of Labrador City, effective at noon on Monday, July 22, 2024.
