News from Pakistan: Saudi Arabia ends loan and accompanying oil supply to Pakistan following threats to split OIC

Saudi Arabia has cut off a loan and oil supplies to Pakistan amid criticism from Islamabad that the Riyadh-dominated Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is not doing enough on the Kashmir issue, signaling further deterioration in relations between two allies. Pakistan’s foreign minister had even threatened to split the OIC if the group fails to convene an independent session on Kashmir.

Pakistan had to repay a $ 1 billion Saudi loan after Pakistan insisted it should head the OIC over the Kashmir affair. The loan was part of a $ 6.2 billion package announced by Saudi Arabia in November 2018, which included a total of $ 3 billion in loans and an oil loan facility totaling $ 3.2 billion. These agreements were signed when Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman paid a visit to Pakistan in February last year.

But Saudi Arabia focusing on further expanding its partnership with India has shown no willingness to convene a single meeting in Kashmir.

Last week, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi urged the OIC to stop the folly at a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Kashmir groups.

Qureshi had told the local media: I am respectfully telling the OIC once again that a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers is our reception. If you can not collect it, then Ill will be forced to ask Prime Minister Imran Khan to convene a meeting of Islamic countries that are willing to stand with us on the Kashmir issue and support suppressed Kashmiris.

In response to a question from reporters, Qureshi also said Pakistan could not wait any longer and threatened that if the OIC fails to convene the CFM meeting, Pakistan would be willing to go for a session outside the OIC.

The minister recalled that Pakistan bypassed the Kuala Lumpur summit in December at the request of Saudi Arabia and now Pakistani Muslims are demanding that Riyadh show leadership on the issue.

Pakistan’s stance is backed by Turkey, which wants to challenge Saudi Arabia’s leadership in the Islamic world. Riyadh supports New Delhi’s position that Kashmir is its internal affair. The UAE, Oman and several nations of North Africa and West Asia are among the other Muslim-majority countries that support India for this. India also has tacit support from Indonesia, the largest nation in the Muslim world. In addition to the Central Asian states have also supported India.

In May, the Maldives had initiated an action to oppose Pakistan’s opposition against India at the OIC meeting. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (once Pakistan’s traditional allies) had backed the stance taken by the Maldives, a sign of their expanding ties with New Delhi. Oman, India’s oldest strategic partner in the Gulf region, is believed to have stated at the meeting that the lecture is part of India ‘s internal affairs, according to sources.

A number of other OIC countries had not responded to the Pakistani initiative led by its Permanent Representative (PR) to the UN. Interestingly, the UAE decision to support India had drawn reactions from Pakistan-based social media. The UAE had chaired the virtual PR meeting on 19 May.
