Large rivers in Central India in severe flood situation

The Central Water Commission (CWC) has said major rivers flowed in severe flooding on Saturday at 33 stations across Bihar, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Telangana and one each in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal due to improving monsoon conditions created by successive low-pressure areas of the Bay of Bengal.

The South Peninsula has not witnessed large showers some low pressure intrusive areas chose to look different and gave birth to East, Center, West and North-West India. The U.S. National Center for Environmental Forecasting estimates it would not happen until the first week of September, when the next round of significant rainfall could come in the southern states.

The WCC said Saturday that at least 27 stations in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana witnessed rivers in above normal flood conditions. This is also as a well-marked low-pressure area takes its time by dumping its voluminous contents on Madhya Pradesh and preparing to move towards Gujarat and South Rajasthan over the next 2-3 days.

Low-scoring sits nicely

The Meteorological Department in India (IMD) has maintained its vigilance for another low-pressure area rotating over the North-West Bay likely on Sunday. The rains are expected to return again to the East and near Central India. Large to very severe isolated falls could damage Odisha by Tuesday; on the plains of West Bengal on Monday and Tuesday; and Jharkhand on Tuesday.

The Godavari River and its tributaries are flowing in severe flood situation with a slow rising trend. While rainfall may be declining, river levels may be declining slowly over the next 2-3 days. She has called for a careful monitoring of the situation in the districts of Nowrangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri in Odisha and Bastar, Sukma, Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur in Chhattisgarh.

Rivers sliding, alarm sounded

Similarly, an alarm has been sounded in the districts of Mandla, Betul, Seoni and Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh; Bhandara, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli of Maharashtra; Mulugu, Bhadradri and Kothagudem in Telangana; and Godavari East and West in Andhra Pradesh, the CWC said in its newsletter released Saturday.

The Krishna River and such tributaries are expected to continue to slow down and most dams in the pond are expected to release significant amounts of water due to forecast rainfall. Almost all dams in the Krishna Basin in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have reached close to full reservoir level.

Close supervision should be maintained in the districts of Pune, Satara and Kolhapur in Maharashtra; Bagalkote, Vijayapura, Raichur, Belagavi in Karnataka; Jogulamba Gadwal and Nalgonda in Telangana; and Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool, Guntur and Krishna, especially given the fact that neither the low road nor its travel route is growing too far from their catchment areas.

The Narmada River and its tributaries are expected to rise in Mandla as well as downstream of the Bargi Dam in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, as it is releasing excess water. The Mahi River and its tributaries are also expected to rise. A tight hour is required in Dhar, Jhabua, Ratlam districts in Madhya Pradesh; Banswara, Dungarpur and Pratapgarh in Rajasthan; and Mahisagar, Panchmahal and Kheda in Gujarat, the CWC said.

Heavy rain to continue

Meanwhile, during the nine hours that ended Saturday, the following centers received moderate to heavy rainfall (in cm). IMD listed them as Alibagh-19; Bhuj and Bankura-7 each; Keshod, Gandhinagar, Dharmsala, Mukteshwar-5 each; Veraval, Sagar, Banihal, Mumbai (Santa Cruz) and Mahabaleshwar-4 each.

IMD expected low pressure areas well marked that at least 2-3 days had to pass through West Madhya Pradesh. The parent monsoon pit continues to remain active under the observation of a useful monsoon turbulence calming zone, given that a cool low is spreading in the Gulf and is expected to take a similar path as the precursor to its forward movement.

Widespread rainfall with heavy isolated to very heavy rainfall is forecast for Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Telangana, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan over the next 2-3 days and extremely heavy isolated over Eastern Rajasthan and Gujarat Saturday and Sunday; for West Madhya Pradesh and Saturday Madhya Maharashtra; and Saurashtra and Kutch on Sunday and Monday.

A broad view for August 27-29 said that quite widespread rain / thunderstorms could erupt over the coasts of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh; and scattered rain / thunderstorms quite prevalent in the Northeast and around East India.

Large to very severe isolated declines have been seen in Uttar Pradesh South, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh East, East Rajasthan and Gujarat State during this period.
