Cache County School District Moves for Bus Lunch Delivery | Education

With its school buses no longer commuting between children and school due to the coronavirus, the Cache County School District is moving into a new use for them by providing free breakfast and lunch to students of all ages.

School district take-out food delivery program started on Monday and, according to a statement by Cache County School District, the program will provide free meals to all children 0-18 years of age, not just those who are eligible reduced lunch program.

Just because the school is closed doesn’t mean there is no need in the community yet, said Kurt Jenkins, director of student services for the Cache County School District. Parents may be having economic hardship right now and this should be the last worry they have in mind.

It’s our business, we feed the kids, said Susan Wallentine, Cache Nutrition School Coordinator, Child Nutrition.

The bus drivers lead their typical afternoon basic routes every day from 11:30 am to deliver the lunches.

There are no specific times when buses will arrive at a stop, the statement said. The number of people at each stop en route will change when a bus reaches a particular stop, so “follow your best judgment.

Meals delivered include both lunch on the same day and breakfast the next day.

Meals are also served at the 25 school sites in the Cache County school district from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. for those in the walking areas. Food cannot be consumed on campus in order to respect social distance; it must be brought home.

Also for the sake of social distancing, the school district asked families to limit the number of members who go to get food. Children do not need to be present when picking food.

Meals for secondary and elementary students will be delivered to primary bus stops only, and parents with children in more than one school can pick up their children’s lunches at the stop most convenient for them .

No take-out meals will be served during the spring break, from April 1 to 6.

The district office and all schools will also be closed during this time, says the Cache School School District. We also suggest closing home schooling. We all need a break.

Take-out meal services will resume after the spring break and are expected to continue until the students return on May 4.
