With three students who took their lives the day before NEET exam Sundays, senior actor Suriya was among them who issued statements condemning the situation in Tamil Nadu on Controversial Competitive Exams. But certain parts of the Tamil actors’ statement right now have started a storm with a Madras Supreme Court judge calling for judicial contempt action and the retired old judge lined up in support of the star.
What did Syria say in his statement?
Syria’s statement had a section blaming the Supreme Court for forcing students to write NEET amid a pandemic. In his statement, the actor said that the three suicide deaths on Saturday, a day before the scheduled exam, due to the stress and anxiety of taking the test amid the pandemic had shaken his conscience.

Suriya said it was painful that students were forced to prove their right by writing a test at a time when there was a threat to life due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While the first part of Syria’s statement had to do mainly with insensitivity in prioritizing a nationwide exam amid a pandemic, he also remarked on the biggest systemic problems: A government that was supposed to provide equal opportunities for all brought a law with an education system that creates inequality, the actor wrote. He blamed the education policies in the country and said they were formulated by people who do not know the basic reality of the poor and oppressed.
What offended the Madras Supreme Court judge?
The statement had a part that referred to the judiciary: The courts were giving justice through video conferencing because of the life-threatening coronavirus (but) they are ordering students to go without fear and write the exams.
This offended SM Subramaniam of Justice who wrote to Chief Justice AP Sahi about initiating contempt proceedings against Syria. Justice Subramaniam wrote that the statement claims that Honorable Judges fear for their lives and the delivery of justice through video conferencing. Whereas, they have no morals to pass orders directing students to appear in the NEET Exam without fear.

The statement made, in my opinion, constitutes contempt of the Court as the integrity and dedication of the Honorable Judges as well as the Judicial System of our Great Nation are not only undermined but criticized in a bad situation, where there is a threat to the Faith of the public in the Judiciary, says the Justice Subramaniams letter to CJ Sahi, adding that the actor has committed contempt, guaranteeing contempt procedures to uphold the Majesty of our Indian Judicial System.
The Tamil Nadu Bar Association also condemned Syria’s statement.
What happened next?
As of Monday evening, six veteran jurists joined hands in support of the actor. They urged CJ Sahi to avoid any action against the actor.

Referring to the arguments raised in the Justice Subramaniams letter against the actor, a letter signed by six retired judges of Madras HC said, such a construction made on the Suriya statement would be slightly out of the sign and does not require any action as required by the learner judge When four students have committed suicide incapable of meeting NEET requirements and in an augmented atmosphere, an artistic person over the reaction should not be taken seriously and out of context.
All of them, including Retired Directors K Chandru, KN Basha, T Sudanthiram, D Hariparanthaman, K Kannan and GM Akbar Ali, added that we should show generosity and generosity in leaving the matter without any knowledge considering the good work social made by the actor through his faith, who had helped hundreds of poor students to complete their higher education and get jobs.
