Parents of coronavirus-born twins talk about their experience

Parents have spoken of their relief after their premature twins – who were born with the coronavirus – were allowed home.

Sarah Curtis, 32, was diagnosed with COVID-19 just days before giving birth.

Although asymptomatic, Curtis felt frightened and annoyed by the prospect of endangering her children, a fear exacerbated by doctors not knowing whether or not her unborn twins could get the virus in their wombs.

She entered work ten weeks early on July 3, but due to coronavirus hospital restrictions, her husband Aaron, 33, was unable to be there.

The twins, Kenna and Lissa, were born weighing just 3 bs each. Shortly after birth it was confirmed that they were both suffering from COVID-19, which was passed to them through the placenta.

Aaron was finally able to see the babies and his wife on July 11, after a difficult eight-day separation.

Six weeks later, the family was able to leave the hospital and continue to care for their children at home after they were judged in good and well condition.

I was more afraid of having Covid than breaking the water – I was so nervous, Curtis explained.

When I got the confirmation that I had coronavirus, I was so angry with myself.

I did not know what exactly it meant, it was so nerve-wracking.

I lost a girl and I was afraid of the worst.

Curtiss’s pregnancy was not straightforward, as she was diagnosed with twin-to-twin syndrome, a prenatal condition in which twins share unequal amounts of placental blood supply resulting in the growth of two fetuses at different rates.

I had a really difficult pregnancy – I had twin-to-twin syndrome, Curtis said.

I had to have laser surgery, where we were told they were trying to save one of the babies – we should not have both.

Adam was allowed to come see me after all because of the coronavirus.

It was a miracle the two twins survived.

Last week at the hospital felt like a prison sentence.

But thankfully the staff was simply brilliant. They made us feel comfortable, despite the anxiety.

It was ultimately worth it. It has been a surreal year, but we came up with two beautiful, healthy girls.

Her husband admitted that knowing that his wife was going through everything on her own was difficult, especially since he did not know what was going on overnight.

The twins were studied throughout their stay at West Cumberland Hospital as doctors tried to learn more about COVID-19 in infants.

When they were born, their heads were the size of digestive biscuits, but they grew in strength while they were in the hospital.

Curtis praised hospital doctors for previous help to her family when their daughter, Lottie, died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (also known as cot death) in 2017.

“The staff at the West Cumberland delivery kit were fantastic and helped me. I was so scared to bring [the twins] at home after losing Lottie, she said.

Still scary as they have not passed that age where you stop worrying but [the staff] helped me and showed me that there is happiness behind.

The staff was incredible from start to finish and made us feel so comfortable, despite all the anxieties related to the pregnancy.

I know people will applaud for the caretakers during the block, but they are excellent all year round, always.

We would not have kept our two beautiful and healthy twins if it were not for their wonderful and determined work.
