Trudeau urges Canadians to be vigilant as COVID-19 cases mount

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is urging Canadians to be vigilant in following public health guidelines as COVID-19 cases spread across the country.

Speaking to reporters ahead of a two-day cabinet reshuffle in Ottawa, Trudeau warned that as the number of new infections rises, “we are not out of the woods” when it comes to the health crisis. He said people should “be there for each other” by maintaining physical distance, washing hands and wearing masks.

“The last thing anyone wants is to go this fall into a jam similar to this spring and the way we do it is staying vigilant,” he said.

The withdrawal of the cabinet comes before the return of Parliament on 23 September. Trudeau said the government’s focus is on keeping Canadians safe through the COVID-19 crisis by keeping broadcasting under control and not overloading the health care system.

In an interview with Radio CBC The current, Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam said the current spread of the novel coronavirus is different from the first wave.

‘Slow and steady growth’: Dr. Tam

“What we are experiencing now is quite different from the initial escalation and that rising wave. What we have seen in recent weeks has been a slow but steady increase in cases, especially in the four major provinces, BC, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec, “she told CEO Matt Galloway.

“So it’s not that this is some kind of very rapid escalation or exponential growth we had at the beginning of the first wave. At the moment, that means we can do everything we can to continue this kind of accustomed audience. , effective health measures personally, but also as a community, to keep things at a manageable level “.

In the country’s most populous province of Ontario, the average number of new COVID-19 infections has doubled in just three weeks. The daily number of Ontario has exceeded 200 in each of the last three days, something that has not happened since the beginning of June. On Monday, the province reported 313 new cases.

Tam said the increase in cases coincides with the upcoming flu season, which usually sends many Canadians to emergency rooms across the country. While the public health measures set for COVID-19 could help reduce the number of flu cases, she urged people to get the flu vaccine.

“Getting the flu will help protect yourself, your community and the health system from overload,” she said.

Acknowledging that there is some fatigue from public health measures, Tam said that with the increase in cases affecting Canadian young people aged 20-29, officials need to step up communication and communication efforts targeting that age group.

Tam is one of the few public and scientific health experts who will inform the retiring cabinet. Chief science adviser Mona Nemer will be making a presentation to ministers.

Cabinet drafting plan for economic recovery

The Liberal cabinet withdrawal, which is bringing most ministers together in person, will be followed by a press conference on Wednesday.

The parliamentary session will begin with a speech from the throne, which will present the government’s plan for economic recovery from the massive disruption caused by the global pandemic.

Sources have told CBC News that the throne speech could promise housing investment and a long-term overhaul of the employment insurance system.

The government is also expected to signal its intention to make childcare more accessible and launch a green recovery plan, while focusing on the ongoing public health crisis.

Speech from the throne will lead to a vote of confidence which could topple the government and trigger autumn elections.

Trudeau predicted Parliament to restore the government’s agenda, declaring that the mandate had been overturned by the pandemic. He has said the government wants to come up with an ambitious plan to “rebuild better” through substantial green recovery efforts.

Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said the long-term plan will promote sustainability in the economy and work to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

“The government has said very clearly from the beginning that the focus is on ensuring that we are supporting Canadians and Canadian businesses through this process,” he said.

“But of course, as we look ahead, we need to think about priorities, and those priorities need to be about job creation, economic recovery, but they also need to be about the crises we know are on the horizon. and that is the climate change crisis and the global decline of biodiversity. “

Justice Minister David Lamettisa said the priority for the government is to address the two challenges of controlling COVID-19 as it plans economic recovery.

“We have to design where we will take the country,” he said. “Obviously, we are listening to Canadians and we will do, hopefully, some very positive things as we exit COVID.”

It is the first time the Liberal cabinet has met in person since the pandemic struck. Lametti said ministers were told the meeting was “safe and compatible”.
