Salvini threatens a no-confidence vote over the ‘chaotic’ reopening of Italy’s schools

Matteo Salvini, Italy’s right-wing politician, has called for a no-confidence motion against the education minister, blaming him for a chaotic reopening of Italian schools on Monday after a six-month shutdown to slow the spread of Covid-19.

As more than 5 million students returned to school amid protests over lack of adequate space and confusion over complex security measures, Mr Salvini stepped up pressure on Lucia Azzolina, announcing that the motion against her would go down in the Senate later this week. .

We have repeatedly presented our proposals to Minister Azzolina on how to address the shortage of teachers and classrooms, but she always ignored them, the leader of the League parties said on Monday, adding that he was expressing the concerns of Italian families, students and teachers.

Regional governors and school managers across Italy have complained over the past three weeks about several issues, including protective masks for new students and delays in distributing new one-seat tables designed to ensure distancing. Seven regions decided to postpone the reopening of the school until the end of this month.

Ms. Azzolina has always rejected criticism, saying the government has worked hard to provide greater security for students and school staff, also stressing the employment of more than 84,000 teachers to deal with an unprecedented emergency.

She strongly defended the governments’ decision to close all schools in early March, during the early stages of the virus outbreak.

New Covid-19 infections have been steadily rising over the past six weeks, raising concerns that schools could become hotbeds of new outbreaks.

In a televised message to students and teachers Sunday, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte acknowledged that reopening the school was a major challenge for the entire country. He stressed that Italian schools have been suffering from structural weaknesses for a long time, which have been exacerbated by the pandemic and need a long-term strategy to address them.

A no-confidence vote against Ms. Azzolina in the Senate where Mr Conte’s fragile coalition relies on a slim majority – would be a new headache for the Prime Minister, shortly before the September 20-21 regional elections.

A victory by the center-right alliance which is leading in four of the seven regions would hit the stability of the government and could increase Mr Salvinis’ pressure for early elections.
