The Delhi assembly peace and harmony committee on Tuesday issued a warning to Facebook India after its deputy chairman (VP) and managing director (MD) Ajay Mohan did not appear before the third session of the panel, though he was summoned.
Raghav Chadha, committee chairman and a lawmaker of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) by Rajendra Nagar, said Mohan’s refusal to appear before the panel was contempt of the Delhi legislature.
During the hearing, which was broadcast live to the media, Chadha said, “Facebook India’s refusal to appear before the committee is an attempt to hide essential facts about the role of the social media firm in the municipal unrest in northeastern Delhi. “This non-cooperation shows that Facebook India wants to hide its role in the riots,” Chadha said.

He said that instead of appearing before the committee, the company sent a letter to the panel.
In its response to the committee’s announcement, Facebook said Parliament, which has exclusive rights, is considering the matter and the Union government has the rights of law and order over the national capital.
Chadha cited the response as contempt for the two Delhi residents because lawmakers are elected representatives.
“The legislative functions of the state are independent of the parliamentary functions. Facebook India has said the matter is under the jurisdiction of Parliament. “This is completely wrong,” he said.
“As this issue is sensitive in nature and relates to the peace and harmony of Delhi, we have decided to issue a final warning to Facebook India under the principle of natural justice. We want to give every accused the opportunity to be heard. We are giving one last chance to appear before the committee.
The panel will post another announcement on Facebook India. He will also explain to the company about the privileges of the Delhi assembly panel, “he added.
A response from Facebook India was not immediately available.
The Delhi assembly peace and harmony committee had issued a notice to Mohan regarding complaints about allegations of “deliberate and deliberate inaction of the social media society to contain hateful content” in the country.
The announcement came after the committee, in its second session on August 31, had said prima facie that it had found that Facebook India was suspected of being an accomplice in the escalation of Delhi’s north-east riots in February, which left 53 people dead. and over 400 injured.
The committee is investigating the matter after receiving recognition of “some complaints” received from the public based on an article published in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on August 14th.
The report, titled ‘Facebook’s hate speech rules clash with Indian politics’, said company officials, particularly Ankhi Das, director of public policy for India, South and Central Asia, reportedly cited business imperatives as they chose to did not enforce hate speech rules for at least four individuals and groups affiliated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the country.
The offer to invoke hate speech rules was allegedly rejected, though concerns were noted inside.
India is the largest market for the social media company, headquartered in Menlo Park, California, United States of America (USA). There are over 290 million Facebook users in the country.
