Warring parties in Yemen to travel to Switzerland to discuss the release of prisoners

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – Delegations from Yemen’s warring parties will meet in Switzerland this week for talks on a UN-backed prisoner swap deal, which UN envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths said on Tuesday. hopes to result in the release of some of those arrested.

Griffiths told the UN Security Council that the logistical arrangements allowing talks would resume in Switzerland this week between the two delegations. A UN source said talks would begin on Thursday.

The parties pledged to release the conflict-related prisoners and detainees back in 2018 in Stockholm and continued their discussions to fulfill that commitment in Amman earlier this year, Griffiths told the council. What I hope is that this meeting will result in the release of some prisoners.

Mohammed Abdulsalam, chief negotiator of the Houthi movement, told Reuters his group committee would leave Sanaa on a UN plane.

The Iran-backed government Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemen are trying to reach an agreement to end a years-long war and ease a humanitarian crisis in the poorest country in the Arabian Peninsula.

Griffiths told the 15-member UN Security Council that he sent an advanced draft of a ceasefire agreement to the Yemeni warring parties last week and now is the time for the parties to conclude negotiations quickly.

He also said that the political significance of the gas-rich Marib – the last bastion of government where fighting has taken place over the past year – should not be underestimated and that military relocations and the consequences and events in Marib have different effects on conflict dynamics in all of Yemen.
