Armed groups pursue sheriff’s order to close gun stores in LA county

Armed groups have gone to court, seeking to suspend a firearms closure order issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff. Gun stores were considered non-essential businesses, which forced them to close under the LA County Home Stay Order, according to the Sheriff’s Order of March 26.

The lawsuit, brought by Adam Brady, Daemion Garr and several 2nd Amendment advocates, including the National Rifle Association, was filed in Los Angeles federal court Friday, seeking an injunction against Los Angeles county sheriff Alex Villanueva, Governor Gavin Newsom and other government officials in connection with the order, saying it violates “the human rights of law-abiding Californians.”

He cited a multitude of federal and state gun store regulations protecting the rights of gun owners, arguing that such a closure is particularly ill-advised in the event of a crisis. The 30-page file argued that it was illegal “to use a public health crisis as political cover to impose prohibitions and restrictions on rights they do not like”.

The sheriff later clarified the order, stating that while gun stores must be closed to the general public, licensed gun retailers are authorized to sell ammunition to security guard companies.
