Facebook removes two Middle East-focused fake account networks
SAN FRANCISCO – Facebook Inc. said Monday it had removed two networks of fake accounts linked to digital marketing companies in Egypt and India, which were dueling stories about the Gulf countries on Facebook and Instagram.
Facebook, in its first monthly report on information operations, said the two networks had violated its policies on foreign interference, although the world's largest social network had not named no state actor suspected of being behind these efforts.
The operations have broadcast sympathetic content on either side of a diplomatic line that has divided the Middle East since 2017, pitting the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt against Qatar. These countries accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism, which it denies.
Facebook said a network had posted reviews on Qatar and positive comments on the United Arab Emirates. He linked the business to New Waves and Flexell, two companies in Egypt, which he had previously accused of having sown similar stories last year.
Accounts connected to this operation spent about $ 48,500 on ads to improve their content and had more than 6 million followers on Facebook and Instagram, a popular photo sharing app.
Citing repeated violations, Facebook said it was banning the two companies from its platforms.
Graphika, a social media research company that works with Facebook to analyze influence operations, said the operations appeared to be carried out by commercial marketing companies acting at the request of geopolitical actors with interests in the Gulf, thus making them part of an "online influence" model for hiring. "
A smaller network linked to Indian digital marketing company aRep Global had used fake accounts to post praise for Qatar and critics from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Facebook said in its report.
The accounts presented themselves as local journalists and activists and generated traffic to websites disguised as local media, Facebook said. He spent less than $ 450 on ads and had around 100,000 followers on Facebook and Instagram.
