The cases of four people suspected of criminal injuries during the demolition of a statue of slave trader Edward Colston have been referred to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The CPS will decide if charges can be filed after the memorial was made

collapsed in Bristol on June 7th.

Avon and Somerset Police said she was pursuing an arrest and eight people voluntarily came forward.

Five out of nine people have been offered restorative justice.

The force suggested that this could include a fine and some form of community service.

The bronze statue of the 17th Century slave trader was pulled from its pedestal during a Black Lives Matter protest and thrown into the harbor.

Army Chief Andy Marsh told the BBC Bristol that the “act of injury” occurred in “an event that carried a significant amount of danger to Bristol and the community”.

Mr Marsh said: “We have worked closely with the Crown Prosecution Service throughout this investigation, including the proposed restorative justice approach for five out of nine.

“It will be absolutely their independent decision if all four are prosecuted and go to court, and indeed any of the five, if all five refuse to admit their own, what is actually a sentence and out of the reach of court. “

He said he hoped the action taken would be perceived by the public as a “fair and impartial” force enforcing the law.

The statue was found from the floating port of Bristol four days after it was thrown inside, and is being cared for by the Bristol City Council conservation team.

It is expected to be given a new home in a city museum, and ideas are being sought for what should replace it.
