Alton Towers closes water park after nearly 40 visitors suffer from "eye" and throat "irritation"

Almost 40 people suffered from eye and throat irritation at Alton Towers water park.

Emergency services were called to Staffordshire theme park at lunchtime today.

An investigation is underway to find out why this happened.

A spokesman for the station said it was decided to close the water park around 1 p.m.

Medical staff then assessed 39 people, including six children, on the spot, but all were released without treatment, the park said.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue said it was called to the site at around 1:50 p.m. after reports from staff and guests that itched the eyes and throat.

A fire department spokesperson said the teams were doing an assessment.

Staffordshire police confirmed the presence of their officers after being alerted at 1:45 p.m. by the West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS).

The doctors arrived around 1:30 p.m. and an air ambulance was dispatched to the scene.

A spokesperson for Alton Towers Resort said it made the decision to close the water park after a small number of people reported eye and throat irritation.

She added: Firefighters, WMAS and Staffordshire police were on site, as is the norm for any site where chemicals are used.

Thirty-nine people, including six children, were assessed by medical staff, but all were released without any treatment required.
