Sadiq Khan Says London Elections Will Focus On Rent Control | Politics
The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, launches his re-election campaign with a challenge to Boris Johnson to allow the introduction of rent controls if Khan wins a new term.
Khan said the May 7 victory would mean that Johnson could no longer ignore political demands because he would ignore the democratic will of millions of Londoners.
Starting his campaign in a housing estate in Hackney on Tuesday, the mayor had to say: The argument in favor of rent control is now absolutely undeniable. But the conservative ministers prevented us from introducing our rent control plans in London and simply said no.

Khan said his rent control plan would establish a new private rent commission in London, with tenants on its board, to implement and enforce rent control measures.
Rent control systems exist in other major cities. In Berlin, rents are controlled inside and between rentals. In New York, some rents are capped by the NYC Rent Guidelines Board, and others are stabilized or reset between rentals.
Khan also plans to end the evictions without fail and to extend the minimum notice periods from owner to tenant to four months.
Caitlin Wilkinson, policy officer for the Generation Rent campaign group, said: London is one of the most expensive cities to rent on the planet. Soaring rents mean that the basic need for safe and secure housing is out of reach for too many people. Londoners are excluded from the neighborhoods in which they grew up or forced to leave the city.
Conservative mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey said that rent control ideas have failed where they have been tried elsewhere, which has resulted in higher rents and longer waiting lists.
He said: This is a transparent attempt to divert attention from Sadiq Khan's abysmal record on building the houses that London needs. Although he received $ 5 billion from the government to build them, he delivered only a tiny fraction of the new homes he had promised.
