Colleges in San Diego cancel study abroad programs in China, South Korea and Italy due to government travel advisories regarding the new coronavirus.
On Monday, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention published level three travel warnings for these countries and Iran. A level three travel warning means the government is recommending people to avoid non-essential travel to these regions.
Most of our students tend to study abroad in the fall rather than in the spring, so our numbers are like a third of what they are compared to the semester Fall, said Denise Dimon, deputy director of international affairs at the University of San Diego.
She works to help 19 students enrolled in a study abroad program in Italy to return home.
Parents and students are concerned about their finances and their academics, but unfortunately the thing that we cannot resolve, what is most important to them, is this experience that they will now miss. she said.
Dimon said that for most students who return early, this means postponing a flight for an earlier date. She said the university is working with their overseas partners to eliminate as much additional expense as possible and that the airlines have waived the change fees.
UC San Diego suspended its programs in China, South Korea and Italy this quarter. The university tracks decisions made by the University of California system, which tracks travel advisories from the State Department. On Monday, San Diego State University said it had 12 students enrolled in a spring program in South Korea that it is suspending. Eight students had already left the United States when the notice was put in place.
At USD, some students abroad in Italy have decided to stay. Dimon said the students are located in southern Italy, outside of the affected areas. But that could change, she said, and if it does, students will be able to stay in campus accommodation even if universities temporarily close.
It will be their personal decision, said Dimon. They remain at their own risk and against government directives which do not recommend any non-essential travel to these places.
For students returning to the United States, the programs allow them to complete their academic work remotely.
We currently have students in Rome, she said. Their program is supposed to last four semesters and they have just started. It’s just such a disappointment and of course they can go back. Let's just hope that by the fall semester things will calm down a bit and that our students will have these wonderful international experiences.
Dimon said the USD has 400 students who have enrolled in the fall programs to study abroad. At the moment, she advises all these students to register for courses abroad but also on the San Diego campus, in case other programs have to be canceled. .
Were trying to keep it open, she said. We just had a meeting this morning to discuss how to keep it open but also to minimize the risk.
The USD will follow travel advisories and recommendations from the CDC and other government agencies, but is also working with their partners abroad and other universities.
There are certain programs that don't start until the end of September, depending on where they are in the world, said Dimon. Some programs start in early July. So, we're just going to have to look and see how it all goes. We want to keep students excited about the possibilities.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
