EU imposes sanctions on 7 senior Syrian officials

The European Union on Friday imposed sanctions on seven ministers recently appointed by the Bashar Assad regime, blaming those who played a role in the ongoing crackdown on civilians in the war-torn country.

Asset freezes and travel bans in Europe were imposed on seven, which include the ministers of justice, finance, transport, education and culture.

Most are accused of sharing “responsibility for the violent repression of Syrian civilian regimes,” the EU said.

With the new sanctions, the number of people targeted by EU measures has risen to 280.

Another 70 “unit, including organizations, banks and companies, are also on the blacklist, mainly to take advantage of their ties to the regime.

The EU began imposing sanctions in 2011 when the Russian-backed Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protesters.

The measures also include banning oil imports, investment restrictions, freezing central bank assets held in the EU and export limits on equipment and technology that could be used to hit civilians or monitor their phones and internet.

The UK-based independent human rights monitoring group The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) recently reported that the Assad regime has decided to execute at least 2,147 people and confiscate at least 4,000 people’s property through the “court” of terror “since July 2012.

The SNHR said the courts were set up in July 2012 to disperse opposition groups and movements. The Assad regime, which has killed or detained hundreds of thousands of civilians and displaced more than 10 million since the outbreak of civil war in 2011, describes opposition political or military figures as “terrorists”.
