For more than four hundred years now, Dasara has been celebrated with grandeur and extravagance in Karnataka like Naada Habba or state festival. The 10-day event, which sees about 10 tourists flocking to Mysuru, will see some major changes this time as the procession will be limited to the palace grounds, with only 200 people for the inauguration and 300 people for the Jumboo savari. One aspect, however, remains unchanged: Dasara will still celebrate the triumph of good over evil.
In the time of Covid-19, the forces of good have taken the form of thousands of front-line medical fraternity workers, pourakarmikas, social workers and the Karnataka police and government have planned to enjoy them for their tireless work.
For police officer Kumar P, additional tasks included enforcing quarantine and tracking key contacts of those who were positive and had traveled to different cities and states.
Kumar and his team did important work in finding the source of the infection in large groups. Some people were even given the wrong numbers which made it very difficult to find them, but the team went on, said N Prakash Gowda, Deputy Police Commissioner, Mysuru.
for pourakarmika worker Margamma N Narasimha (38), the pandemic caused severe damage. My mother was hospitalized and eventually underwent Covid-19, said Margamma’s husband. Despite this loss and half of her family was positive test for the virus, after Margamma and her husband recovered, they returned to work. Aside from being a necessity, work for me is dharma and I have to do it, she said.
Of hope and courage
While Margamma’s motivation is fulfilling her dharma, Noor Jahan (32) withdrew from the idea of introducing hope. To hope, you must have Himma (Courage). In my job, I met people who gave me courage and on the other hand I was able to build trust in others, she said.
As Asha’s worker, Noor spent most of the day comforting anxious patients, controlling their healing, and even handing out food and medicine by hand.
On the front line, courage seems to be essential. Ayub Ahmed (40), social worker and founder of Insanyat Charitable Trust, stressed the need to face the challenge. “If we leave and do not get up at a time like this, everything we stand for is useless,” he said.
The Ahmeds organization has worked to provide food, clothing and shelter for the homeless across the country. So far, they have been able to reach over 58,000 people. He also works to ensure dignified burials and has helped bury more than 350 bodies since March, but he does not like to keep counting because it is merely a service and does not want to see it as an achievement.
In March, before the pandemic hit the state, Prime Minister Rukmini, 49, a nurse, spent her time preparing wards to treat potential patients. With no elevator and about 250 beds to be placed on different floors, her small team of six people also had to move all the equipment precisely to the designated wards. Rukmin showed that his muscles ached, but at the end of the day everything was worth it. When the first group of 90 patients left the hospital, cured and happy, I felt as if my close relatives had come and gone, she said.
Dr Naveen TR who works at an Urban Primary Health Center in Mysuru, has worked to test thousands of people, treat patients in control areas and also ensure the proper functioning of regular immunization programs. We have worked tirelessly and are just doing our homework honestly. I could not have done any of these without my team. I am not only acknowledging this honor for myself, but on behalf of all the doctors and all the Covid fighters, he said.
Honor to all
Kumar P, Margamma N Narasimha, Noor Jahan, Ayub Ahmed, Prime Minister Rukmini and Dr Naveen TR are all front line workers who will be felicitated by the state government at the Dasara celebrations. They are recommended for exemplary work during the pandemic by their departments.
These extraordinary people are representatives of many others like them. This honor also extends to any other person who has worked day and night to provide essential services, said Manjunath Swamy, Deputy Additional Commissioner, Mysuru, a member of the Dasara Committee. This recognition has a special significance for Ahmed, who was once a spectator at these holidays. As someone who watched this holiday grow, being part of it today makes me feel very happy and grateful.
