New Delhi: Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday that peace and tranquility along the Current Control Line (LAC) is deeply concerned and this is undoubtedly affecting overall relations between India and China.
Jaishankar made the comments amid a five-month blockade of the India-China border in eastern Ladakh, where each side has deployed more than 50,000 troops.
The issue of the Sino-India border is a very complicated and difficult issue, he said in a webinar in his book ‘India’s Way: Strategies for an Insecure World’, giving a historical perspective to the development of relations between two neighboring countries in the last three decades.
The foreign minister said the relationship between India and China, which was “very difficult”, had been normalized since the late 1980s through a plethora of initiatives such as trade, travel, tourism and social activities on the premises of peace and tranquility throughout border.
“It is not our position that we should resolve the border issue. We understand that it is a very complicated and difficult issue. There has been a lot of negotiation at different levels… This is a very high bar for a relationship, ”Jaishankar said via video conference at the Pune webinar event moderated by former Ambassador Gautam Bambawale. (PTI)

“I’m talking about a much more fundamental bar that is that there should be peace and tranquility along the LAC in border areas and that has been happening since the late 1980s,” he added. “Now, if peace and tranquility are deeply broken, then there will definitely be an impact on relations and that is what we are seeing,” he said, referring to the border situation in eastern Ladakh. Jaishankar said China and India are growing and taking on “bigger” roles in the world, but the “big question” is how the two countries find a “balance”.
“This is the fundamental issue I addressed in my book,” the minister said, adding that he completed the manuscript in April, a few weeks before the border blockade in eastern Ladakh erupted. Asked if India should grow at a faster pace of GDP growth in order for asymmetry with China to diminish economically, militarily and otherwise, Jaishankar referred to the different sociology, politics and nature of governance between the two neighbors. Jaishankar said he would like India to grow much faster and develop more skills, but noted that this should not be due to competition with China.
“I think we have to do it for ourselves. In a sense we are competing against everyone in the world. “It’s a world where every great power is competing against every other country, even friendly countries when it comes to eco-skills,” he said. “I feel there are lessons we can learn from China. The way China has grown. But at the same time, let’s be very clear. We are not China. When people suggest you fix this, they did this, you did this … Our sociology is different, our politics is different, The nature of our governance is very different. “He added:” How do you learn from experiences from a different path? Even if we are not similar, there are lessons to be learned. “
Speaking of key geopolitical developments over the past seven decades, Jaishankar referred to Europe’s prosperity and Japan’s recovery after World War II, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the subsequent emergence of the U.S. as major events, but noted that the point of The turning point came in 2008 which was marked by the global financial crisis and the rise of China, India and the 10-nation ASEAN group. “It simply came to our notice then. The big issues of the day could not be decided by two countries, five countries or seven countries … “” I think the process which started in 2008-09 has taken a sharper turn this year with changes due to the pandemic of coronavirus. “Today, the big shift was towards a multipolar world,” he said.
On India’s economic growth and ways to strengthen it, Jaishankar said there was a need for more focus on the manufacturing sector and human development reforms, adding that the past five years have seen a focus on skills development through a variety of initiatives such as ‘beti bachao beti padhao’ programs. The foreign minister said there was a need for employment-focused growth as well as concentration in the manufacturing sector. “I would say the production strategy needs to be adjusted,” he said, favoring the employment center view. Jaishankar also claimed that the ability to “step up”, “take responsibility” and “do well” is an important part of India’s “rise”.
The union minister said the countries look to India as a more capable neighbor, who they think will do something when needed. “… Today you see the whole Indian Ocean Region, from Fiji to East Africa, in the last five years, whenever there has been a major catastrophe, be it natural, man-made civil war or civil war in Yemen, earthquake in Nepal, landslide. in Sri Lanka or cyclone in Myanmar, we have gone answering because today we have more skills. “People today see us as a more capable neighbor who will do something. So this ability to grow and take on global responsibility and do good has been an important part of our upbringing,” Jaishankar said. Referring to Africa, he said the rise of the continent is in India’s interest. “Facilitating, contributing and partnering to the rise of Africa is in our strategic interest. If Africa becomes one of the poles of global politics, it’s better for us. “We have deep solidarity that came from the anti-colonial movement,” he added. PTI MPB SPK CORR GSN
