Delhi plans infra for up to 12,000 Covid-19 cases per day – news from delhi

The Delhi government plans to add about 5,000 more beds dedicated to being able to treat up to 12,000 daily cases of coronavirus (Covid-19) disease, documents prepared to boost healthcare infrastructure show amid an alarming increase in infections in the National Capital.

For four consecutive days until Friday, new Covid-19 cases in Delhi set one-day records, with a rising rate of positivity indicating that the Capital is probably entering its third and worst yet wave of explosion. On Saturday, Delhi reported 5,062 new Covid-19 cases and the positivity rate rose to 11.42%.

The plan to increase the number of beds to 20,604 by adding 4,891 extra beds in about two weeks has been prepared by the Delhi government’s health and family welfare department based on forecasts made by an expert panel chaired by Niti Aayog member Dr VK Paul. The Delhi government document, seen by HT, said the panel projected the “worst case scenario” in which the number of Covid-19 daily issues in Delhi could reach around 12,000 by the last week of November. The increase is mainly projected based on the increase in activity during the festival season.

Amid the alarming rise in cases in Delhi and the start of the winter season, the Union interior ministry convened a special review meeting with Delhi government officials on Monday to check the spiral of infections, people familiar with the matter told HT Friday. With 5,891 new cases on Friday, Delhi set a new record for the highest new one-day infections for the fourth day in a row. On Saturday, the total number of cases in the Capital was 386,706.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain, however, ruled out the possibility of imposing new restrictions or a blockade on the city to control the Covid-19 blast. “The virus is in the community transmission phase. When a city is in the community transmission phase, it is impossible to eradicate the spread of infection with any form of blockage. Also, it will probably take 2-3 more months for the Covid-19 vaccine to arrive here. So until then, the mask is the only vaccine and the Delhi government is conducting an intensive awareness campaign about it. Enforcement agencies have also been asked to intensify crackdowns on Covid-19 misconduct, “Jain said.

The planned escalation includes 1,558 extra beds in Delhi government hospitals, 1,092 extra beds in central government hospitals and 2,241 extra beds in private hospitals. The projected increase in beds in private hospitals will be subject to the outcome of pending court cases in the Delhi High Court, as well as due to the need, “said the document, which was presented to the chairman of the Disaster Management Authority in Delhi (DDMA), Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, and Delhi Vice President and Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal in addition to the expert committee chaired by Dr. Paul.

The health minister in Delhi said that as of Saturday, the Capital had over 9,400 Covid-19 beds available, including 445 beds in the intensive care unit (ICU) with a fan and 691 beds in the ICU without a fan. Asked about the need for more ICU beds, especially those with ventilators or oxygen support, an official said these would receive an increase in the coming days as the central government sanctioned the installation of PSA oxygen concentrators at eight Delhi government hospitals. “And this is only the first phase, more will be installed later. This will be a major impetus for the establishment of oxygen plant infrastructure in Delhi. At the last DDMA meeting held on October 23, Dr. Paul had suggested stepping up efforts to quarantine contacts until they are confirmed negative for Covid-19. He also advised to further increase the number of contacts tracked for a positive case. “Districts have been asked to ask for each positive case if they have recently been involved in a group activity and if so, they should be tracked, tested and quarantined until tested negative,” said the senior official from the health department in conditions anonymity.

While the government’s response to an RTI indicated that as of September 30, it was tracking only about two contacts in the Covid-19 case in the city, the same was taken up to 13 per case during October, the health official added.

“Special emphasis continues to be placed on the home isolation strategy and only four deaths in the last 3.5 months have occurred. Moreover, the number of deaths within 72 hours of hospitalization has also decreased from 57.37% in June to 26.5% in October… The percentage of active cases within congestion areas has increased from 15-20% previously to 35% now, “read a document compiled by DDMA on October 29th.

Dr T Jacob John, retired professor of clinical virology at Medical Medical College, Vellore, said Delhi faces the extra burden of people moving in and out of the city on a daily basis. “Delhi is a mixed pot. There are 20 million people living within the city, which is equivalent to one place and above all there are some people from other cities who travel daily through the Capital. So it is natural for Delhi to continue to face the burden of multiple waves of Covid-19 cases. But, this nature of the city makes it just as impossible for the city to restore the restrictions that were once in place … It also seems that the virus has now become more contagious, but at the same time it also seems that the severity has somewhat decreased resulting in a lower mortality rate … “, said John.
