Delhi on Wednesday surpassed the psychological mark of 500,000 Covid-19 cases, adding 7,486 new cases to its daily count, according to the Delhi government daily bulletin.

The city also recorded 131 deaths due to infection, the highest even seen in a single day. Prior to that, the highest number of deaths in a day of 104 was reported on 12 November.

This pushed the average seven-day fatality rate (CFR) – the death rate among those who tested positive – to 2.12%. This is much higher than the cumulative CFR – calculated based on the total number of cases and deaths so far – indicating that recent deaths are raising CFR.

The total number of Covid city now stands at 503,084. A total of 43,147 rapid antigen tests and 19,085 most reliable RT-PCR tests were performed, with a positivity rate of 12.03%.

On Tuesday, NITI Aayog member Dr VK Paul said Delhi had shown “dramatic improvement” in reducing deaths due to delayed admissions.

“Initially, when the pandemic started – by about June – almost 60 to 70% of hospital deaths occurred within the first 72 hours. Half of these deaths occurred within the first 24 hours of admission. In Delhi, there has been a dramatic change since then. “We are still monitoring mortality as it shows the efficiency of the system – mobilizing patients from home, the ambulance service, access to beds and the effectiveness of treatment,” he said.

Eleven Delhi government-run hospitals will add 663 beds to intensive care units to the city’s 3,600 existing beds in the coming days, with 232 beds at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital to be operational in the next two days, according to the chief minister. of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal.

“In view of the increased demand for ICU beds in hospitals C Covid hospital directors… are directed to increase ICU beds by updating existing oxygenated beds in their respective hospitals”, reads an order from the special secretary (health) SM Ali. The order was issued after Health Minister Satyendar Jain met with directors and doctors of various Coivd-19 hospitals on Wednesday.

The increase in the number of beds comes after a meeting of Delhi officials with union interior minister Amit Shah on Sunday, where the Center had also promised to increase ICU beds at its makeshift hospital in Dhaula Kuan.

Health ministry officials told a news conference on Tuesday that the ICU bed capacity would increase to 6,000, with the military-run hospital in Dhaula Kuan adding 537 ICU beds, 45 central government hospitals and 2,680 government beds. Delhi, mainly through the order reserving 80% ICU beds in 33 large private hospitals.

“Generally, there are Covid beds available, but there is a shortage of ICU beds. We are making every effort to increase these. Today, I met the GTB hospital doctors and the doctors immediately agreed to increase the 232 beds; it’s very difficult to do that in just 48 hours, but our doctors have responded to the need, “Kejriwal said.

With the third increase in cases paralleling many cities from the West and Europe, CM said, “If you look at places like New York, Sweden, Italy and France, when they had the same number of cases, the videos that came out showed patients in corridors and streets. “There were no beds available. In New York, when 6,300 cases were reported in one day, there were 550 deaths at the time. Our doctors managed the pandemic very well.”

Although Delhi had seen a drop in the number of new cases over the past three days due to fewer tests performed during festivals, the number of hospitalizations due to infection continued to rise. There were 9,343 Covid-19 patients in various hospitals in the city as of Tuesday, the daily health bulletin shows.

Despite the continued increase in the number of beds by the government, 56% of all beds designated for Covid-19 were occupied as of Wednesday evening, the Delhi Corona app showed. The situation is worse for ICU beds, with almost 89% occupied.

“The situation is as bad as it was a week ago; almost every hour I get a call to make a bed. Although more beds have been added, there is still a shortage and I do not see any sign of the situation improving any time soon. “Maybe 10-12 days later, we may see a drop in numbers, but not now,” said Dr Rajesh Chawla, a senior consultant on respiratory and critical care at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital.
