Iran admits breach of nuclear deal discovered by UN inspectorate Iran

Iran has admitted a further breach of the 2015 nuclear deal by melting advanced uranium enrichment centrifuges installed at its Natanz underground plant.

The finding was made by the UN nuclear weapons inspectorate, the International Atomic Energy Agency and confirmed by the Iranian ambassador to the IAEA.

Donald Trump last week considered but rejected a military strike on Natanz, south of Tehran and the countries’ main uranium enrichment site. But the recent move by Iran could be seen by his administration as a provocation that changes his, or Israel’s, calculation of risk. The development comes weeks before he stands up and is replaced by Joe Biden, who is committed to re-entering the nuclear deal reached under Barack Obama.

Under Iran 2015 nuclear deal, the Islamic Republic can only stockpile enriched uranium with first-generation IR-1 cars, which are the only ones allowed to operate at the underground plant. But the IAEA report said Tehran had fed uranium hexafluoride (UF6) raw material to advanced IR-2m machinery.

An earlier IAEA report said Iran had installed IR-2m machines underground. And in its latest report, dated Tuesday, the IAEA states: On November 14, 2020, the Agency verified that Iran began feeding UF6 in the recently installed cascade of 174 IR-2m centrifuges at the Fuel Enrichment Plant (FEP) in Natanz.

The previous report was based on a visit to the factory on November 2 before Biden was elected, but this latest assessment is based on Iranian actions following Bidens’ victory.

Iran has consistently violated the boundaries set in the nuclear deal in what it portrays as a calculated and justified response to the US decision to leave the deal, (known as the Joint General Action Plan, or JCPoA) , impose crippling sanctions and punish European companies seeking to trade with the country.

Iran had previously informed the agency that it would transfer three cascades of uranium enrichment machines from an above-ground pilot plant to the Natanz nuclear power plant underground. It did so after the on-site centrifuge workshop erupted in a notable act of sabotage. The blast was attributed to a fire, but it was unclear whether Israel was involved.

So far, Iran is using only 174 of its IR-2ms, of which there are far more than 1,000. The deal allows Iran to use about 6,000 IR-1s. If Tehran keeps the IR-2ms number low in use, and even if at one point it installs other more advanced centrifuges but also keeps their numbers low, it can reasonably argue that it is simply trying to restore it. that had above ground before the July 2 sabotage of its former Natanz facility.

The IAEA stated last week that Tehran’s explanations were unsatisfactory about the way and why some nuclear-related particles were found by agency inspectors in places where they should not have been present.

In a lengthy interview published Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif clarified Iran’s approach to talks with a Biden administration. He said: “If the US implements its commitments under UN Security Council Resolution 2231, we will implement our commitments under the JCPoA. This can be done automatically and there is no need for negotiations. But if the US wants to rejoin the JCPoA then we will be willing to negotiate how the US can re-enter into the deal.

The Zarifs wording suggests that once the US lifts sanctions on Iran, the country will return to complying with the JCPoA and stop violating uranium enrichment borders. But Zarif is resisting by allowing the US to return to the deal until there is assurances that a US JCPoA member will not use its right unilaterally to declare Iran in violation of the terms of the agreements, and so demands that UN as a whole redesign UN sanctions on Iran.

The quarrel with America is being held against an increasingly bleak backdrop of rising deaths across Iran due to the spread of the coronavirus. Health officials announced Wednesday that a record 13,421 new patients had been identified in the previous 24 hours and another 480 people had died. The official official death toll is 42,941. The spiral in new infections suggests that the death toll will continue to rise.
