Karnataka cabinet panel to look at SC / ST quota increase request | News from Bengaluru

BENGALURU: The state cabinet on Wednesday decided to form a cabinet subcommittee to study the request to increase the reservation of planned castes (SC) and planned tribes (ST) in Karnataka.
Justice Minister JC Madhuswamy said the prime minister BS Yediyurappa will decide on the members of the subcommittee. The decision was made taking into account the report of the Justice Commission Nagamohan Das, recently submitted to the government. The commission was set up to look into the request to increase the SC / ST reservation.
The Commission is understood to have recommended a quota increase of about 2% for both education and employment categories. The final report, prepared after an eight-month study, was presented in Yediyurappa in July this year. Currently, Karnataka has a 15% reserve for 101 planned castes, 3% for 50 planned tribes, and 32% for Other Backward Classes, including Muslims, Christians, and Jains.
The commission received 851 applications, held 38 meetings
The Commission received 851 applications and suggestions and held 38 state-wide meetings between November 2019 and June 2020.
During the previous coalition government led by HD Kumaraswamy, there was a demand to increase booking. In October 2019, the government formed the Nagamohan Das Justice Commission to consider ways to meet the claim.
At the time, there was a proposal to increase SC reservation from 15 per cent to 17 per cent and for ST from 3 per cent to 7 per cent. The Valmiki community, which belongs to ST, demanded an increase in the ST quota to 7.5 percent.
The decision comes close to the heels of the Kuruba and Kodava communities seeking ST labels.
Valmiki strongman and social welfare department minister B Sriramulu, who has led the movement for his community, welcomed the decision.
The decision also appears to be a pro quid quo between Sriramulu and Forest Minister Anand Singh over the former not opposing the creation of the Vijayanagara district and the latter supporting the formation of the subcommittee.
