May consider blocking again after watching for 8-10 days: Maharashtra CM Deputy | Mumbai News

WORK / MUMBAI: Both the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister of Maharashtra raised the spectrum of a possible post-Diwali increase in the Covid cases with the latter hinting at the possibility of re-establishing a deadlock in case the situation requires it.

Ajit Pawar said the government will review the situation over the next 8-10 days before weighing the need to reinstate restrictions based on an assessment of the degree of positivity and prevalence. He referred to Delhi and Ahmedabad where the curbs were returned.
“I do not want to create panic … by making a statement about the blockade if and until we understand the situation properly. There were large crowds during Diwali,” Pawar added.
Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray, in a speech, warned again that a second wave would be a tsunami and demanded strict adherence to social distance and masks. “Should we head back to a deadlock?” he asked, rhetorically.
No decision to stop overnight, but were at a turning point: CM
Ajit Pawar said on Sunday that the first resurgence in positive Covid cases after the Ganesh festival could have a continuation in the post-Diwali period. Most public programs were canceled (during the Ganpati), but due to workers of some mandalas organizing rallies, this led to an increase in positive cases. Now the review is being taken because people have come out for the Diwali festival.
The rise in Covid-19 cases across Maharashtra, including Mumbai, over the past four days is much less steep. But all the same, a total of 5,760 cases and 62 deaths were reported on Saturday, bringing the state load to 17,74,455 and the number to 46,573.
Regarding the reopening of schools, Pawar said that various local government authorities are examining the situation in their surroundings and are receiving the call accordingly. The state has issued standard operating procedures and guidelines for restarting schools, he added.
On the other hand, the speech of the CMs mainly focused on the precautions to be taken such as wearing a mask, avoiding crowds, washing hands and respecting the norms of social distance. He said there had been suggestions to impose a police stop at night in Maharashtra, but a decision had not been taken. He said Covid’s situation was at a point of reflection and it was up to the citizens to choose the direction the state would take.
CM Uddhav Thackeray noted that cases in the state have been reduced with the help of front line workers and cooperation from citizens. But now we are at a turning point and we have to choose the direction (to take). Should we go towards a deadlock? he asked.
Some people have suggested a night curfew. But I feel that everything can not be solved by imposing a law that people in Maharashtra have cooperated with me during Diwali by not using fireworks. In the same way, I am telling you all, do not go out unnecessarily and approach a clinic if symptoms are observed.
On reopening the schools, Thackeray said it was still undecided. Do not think that Covid is over because everything has reopened. We have decided to reopen the school, but there is a question mark over it. Students or teachers should not catch infections.
Thackeray also indirectly mocked the BJP which had organized protests for the reopening of places of worship.
