Calgary to crack down on COVID scandals as cases fly
Calgary will begin to be more aggressive in ensuring compliance with health orders aimed at combating the ongoing pandemic.
Tom Sampson, chief of the Emergency Management Agency in Calgary, said the rules have been in place long enough to move from education to enforcement.
“It has been eight months since we have been educating Albertans on the benefits of face masks and social distancing,” he said.
“Given the alarming increase in these numbers, we need to start a stricter implementation program.”
Sampson said there is clarity in what is expected and clarity in the fines that can be imposed.
On Sunday, Alberta reported 1,608 new COVID-19 cases and the number of active cases in Calgary reached 5,752.
Ryan Pleckaitis, head of Calgary bylaws, said only about a quarter of his peacekeeping officers are currently able to issue tickets, but they are working with the province to expand those numbers.
Supt.Ryan Ayliffesays officers will receive tickets for those who “flagrantly” violate health orders.
“We are now at a critical juncture in society with COVID-19 cases flying,” he said. “The time for education is over.”
He said it might not be safe to issue tickets on the spot.
“For example, during a protest or event where emotions are high, in many cases tickets are issued hours or days after the violation, based on evidence obtained at the time of the event,” he said.
The press conference follows questions on addressing recent violations against provincial restrictions that restrict crowds, including protests against health measures and Black Friday crowds at the Chinook Center.
Ayliffe said “a handful” of tickets were issued today for the weekend protests, but exact numbers were not available. Those tickets include protest leaders.
“We know everyone is fighting now and our goal is not to punish but to protect the safety of the Calgarians as we work together for this,” Ayliffe said.
New rules brought by the province allow the Calgary Police Service to impose a $ 1,000 fine against offenders, but police said at the weekend that they are focused on enforcement education at this time.
