The body of the victim trapped in a collapsed building in London, Ont. recovered as the investigation continues

Attempts to retrieve the body of a person who was trapped after the partial collapse of a building in London, Ont., Have been completed, the City of London said Sunday morning.

The area around 555 Teeple Terrace on the western edge of town was closed shortly before noon Friday when the wall of the multi-storey building under construction suddenly opened. The incident killed two people and injured four brothers.

One person died at the hospital on Friday, shortly after being pulled from the rubble. Another person, who was also pronounced dead Friday, was buried in the rubble until Saturday evening, shortly before midnight when recovery efforts ended, city officials said.

All those killed and injured were working on the construction of a multi-storey building, a project managed by Brock Developments. The Ontario Department of Labor is investigating and the company said it is cooperating.

Attempts to reach the victim were delayed because the building was unstable after the collapse and recovery crews were avoiding further injuries.

A private demolition company was called in to help parts of the building that needed to be dismantled until the structure was stable enough for emergency workers to regenerate the body safely.

The recovery was a joint effort involving the London Police Service, the London Fire Department, the Middlesex-London Paramedic Service and the City of London.

The city said that out of respect for individuals and their families, they will not provide further information about the identities of the victims or the extent of their injuries.

An investigation is underway to determine what caused the collapse, the city said, adding that the scene will remain closed.
