Damages and some GOPs move towards blame

deputy Mike Pence has rejected calls to call the 25th amendment to remove President Trump from office for his role in the Capitol riots. As a result, the Democrat-controlled House is meeting today to vote on impeachment articles against Trump.

It is now unclear how much support there is for blaming Republicans. Home House Republican Liz Cheney has said she will support the blame. The House previously voted 223-205 in favor of a resolution calling for Pence to be called the 25th, with only 5 Republicans joining the majority of Democrats.

What happens next?

Assuming the House passes the impeachment articles by a simple majority, it then falls to the Senate to decide the outcome.

There is some disagreement over when House leaders will send blame articles to the Senate. Some favor sending them right after moving home. Others prefer to wait until Biden has a chance to step down in his cabinet after January 20th.

Once the issue is heard in the Senate, a two-thirds majority of Senators must vote to sentence Trump. If the entire room is seated at the time of voting, that is 17 Republicans will have to vote to condemn.

Republican leaders in both chambers have departed from instructing their colleagues to vote against blame or sentencing. While there are unlikely to be enough departures to condemn, numerous prominent Senate Republicans have condemned the role of President in last Wednesday’s violence. Leader of the Republican Majority Mitch McConnell is said to be pleased with the blame, saying it would make it easier to clear Trump of the GOP.

It may seem pointless to gather for blame just as Trump will step down or even after he has already stepped down. However, if he is convicted, a simple majority in the Senate could prevent Trump from ever holding office again. Trump has expressed interest in running for the Presidency again in 2024

The former Michigan governor is blamed for the Flint water crisis

Michigan state prosecutors have announced they are accusing former Gov. Rick Snyder and others in a Flint 2014 water crisis investigation. The problem began when the state approved a water source change for the city of Flint as a measure of austerity. cost while a pipeline was being built on Lake Huron. However, the water in the Flint River, the new source of water, proved corrosive to the city’s old pipelines. This led to a rash of lead poisoning among the city’s 100,000 black residents as well as an outbreak of Legionnaire disease.

Prosecutors have not yet announced what the charges are against Governor Snyder. Others charged in the investigation include former health department director Nick Lyon and others who were in his administration. Rich Baird, a friend of Snyder who served as the governors’ keynote speaker, is also being investigated.

The Flint water crisis fell as one of the most catastrophic governance failures in U.S. history. Since then, Flint people continue to face issues of cleanliness and higher-than-normal pneumonia deaths. Experts are still compiling the death toll from lead poisoning, legionnaires’ disease and pneumonia. There are no fixed figures, but there may be hundreds.
