SOFIA (Reuters) – Bulgarian President Rumen Radev on Thursday called April parliamentary elections, meaning the center-right coalition government will end a four-year term after surviving anti-corruption protests last summer.

In announcing the April 4 vote, Radev indicated that the country needed a new government as soon as possible, although elections will be held a week later than the earliest possible date due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Radev, a strong critic of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, backed anti-government protests, which he said on Thursday clearly showed that Bulgarians wanted a change, adding that the parliamentary vote this spring was crucial.

Overcoming the deep crisis, the reforms needed for recovery, modernization and full European integration require a legitimate parliament and an active, adequate and working government as soon as possible, he said in televised remarks.

Radev also called for swift changes to the election law to ensure that people under the coronavirus quarantine can vote and to give Bulgarians out of a postal ballot.

Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has dominated Bulgarian politics for the past 10 years, but without his popularity in the summer. Protesters rallied to demand his ouster, accusing him of enabling powerful local tycoons and failing to eradicate top-level transplantation in the poorest member state of the European Union.

Borissov’s third government, which took office in May 2017, ensured economic growth and wage growth while maintaining the fiscal prudence that put Bulgaria on a fast track to adopting the euro. But his failure to treat the endemic graft was very frustrating.

The anti-government protests presented no clear political alternative, and Borissov’s ruling GERB party has since gained a narrow lead over its main rivals, the opposition Socialists.

The latest opinion poll by independent poll Alpha Research showed that polls are unlikely to produce a strong majority government, but a six-party subordinate parliament, which will struggle to form a working coalition.
