UKs Frost says the situation in Northern Ireland is volatile

The UK government urged the European Union to show a “reasonable” approach to their post-Brexit future ahead of a key meeting this week, where both sides will seek solutions to prevent further unrest in Northern Ireland.
“The EU needs a new book on dealing with its neighbors, one that includes pragmatic solutions between friends,” wrote British Brexit minister David Frost article for the Financial Times, where he detailed the problems created by Brexit and their impact on Northern Ireland. “Not imposing the rules of one party on the other and legal purism.”
Northern Ireland has been a major point between the UK and the EU since Britain left the bloc earlier this year, causing violent protests against new border controls and customs documents for trade across the Irish Sea. Meanwhile the EU has filed a legal action against the UK for unilaterally changing the terms of their post-Brexit agreement on Northern Ireland, which has a border with the Republic of Ireland, an EU member.

Clement Beaune, France’s new Minister for European Affairs, responded to Frost’s article by saying that the Northern Ireland Protocol to the Brexit agreement is not the problem, but instead “a solution to a problem that we we did not create it. ” Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney also responded to Frost’s part, dismissing the idea that EU inflexibility is the issue.
Frost, who is expected to speak with European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic at the first UK-EU Partnership Council meeting this week, said Britain was implementing the terms of the Northern Ireland protocol and had made suggestions on how it could be improved.
He also said the British government had underestimated the impact Brexit would have on trade between the rest of the UK and Northern Ireland and that matters could worsen in October when the waiver of food documents expires.
“Time is running out,” Frost said, describing the situation as “completely unstable” unless the EU shows more flexibility in how the protocol is implemented. “We need to see progress soon.”
Joao Vale de Almeida, the EU ambassador to the UK, said there were currently low levels of trust between the two sides and the EU was ready to use retaliatory measures against Britain if it did not support their post-Brexit deal.
“If we need to get there, we will get there,” de Almeida told Times Radio on Sunday. “We are ready for the worst case scenario.”
