SCOTTSBLUFF — The Panhandle Public Health District (PPHD) has relaunched West Nile Virus (WNV) surveillance activities to monitor the presence of viruses in Panhandle.

PPHD is working with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services to track West Nile virus from May to October. PPHD uses a light trap from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to collect test mosquitoes. If one of these traps is found around the area during the summer, it means that there is an ongoing effort to track mosquitoes. When mosquitoes are collected, they are sent to the Nebraska DHHS Institute for Public Health and Environment.
Residents of Salient are encouraged to pay attention outdoors. To prevent mosquito bites, PPHD recommends:
— Apply a mosquito repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil.
— Wear long-sleeved shirts, trousers, and socks in wooded or tall grass areas.
— Avoid mosquitoes going out at the most active dawn and dusk.
— Eliminate accumulated water to reduce mosquito breeding grounds
— Repair the window screen properly.
— Use larval repellents, including Bacillus thuringiensis, in still water that cannot be easily drained.
