LCDPH warns the general public about West Nile virus and mosquitoes

The Logan County Public Health Service is asking the public to participate in the fight against mosquitoes. When a warm climate begins, mosquitoes become more active and threaten mosquito-related diseases such as West Nile virus (WNV). West Nile encephalitis is a brain infection caused by WNV, which is transmitted by mosquito bites.

During warmer climates, the Logan County Public Health Service (LCDPH) calls on everyone to eliminate breeding grounds around their homes and take precautions to prevent mosquito bites. Precautions to prevent mosquitoes are: Outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long trousers, and long-sleeved shirts, and apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil as instructed on the label. Talk to your doctor before using repellents on your baby. Eliminate all pooled water sources that can support mosquito breeding, such as bird baths, ponds, flowerpots, water pools, old tires, and other containers of water. Contact your local government or the Logan County Public Health Service to report roadside ditches, flooded gardens, and areas of stagnant water in similar locations that can cause mosquitoes.

For people who have been bitten by mosquitoes, there is no reason to be tested for WNV because the illnesses associated with being bitten by mosquitoes are rare. However, if you experience symptoms such as high fever, confusion, weakness, or severe headaches, see a doctor.

LCDPH will monitor mosquito activity until October 15 through a grant from the Illinois Public Health Service. Monitoring includes collection of dead birds and submission to the Illinois Institute for WNV testing. The Logan County Public Health Service would appreciate the help of the general public. If you observe a bird that died within 24 hours of a suspected natural cause, contact the health department to see if it is eligible for testing.
