WHO warns that coronavirus blockade will be terminated urgently
Zurich / Geneva — World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday that countries broke regulations to stop the new coronavirus either had to move “very carefully” or at risk of a surge in new cases. I warned you.
Secretary-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said countries need to ensure that adequate measures are in place to control the spread of COVID-19 respiratory disease, including tracking systems and quarantine measures.
He said at a virtual briefing in Geneva, “The risk of returning to a blockade is still very real if countries do not manage the transition very carefully and in stages.”
According to Reuters tally, WHO epidemiologist Maria Wankerhoff upheld concerns about the disease, which infected 3.71 million people and killed more than 258,000 people worldwide.
“If the blockade is released too quickly, a virus can occur.”
Government-ordered blockades are becoming increasingly unpopular as the country suffers from increased unemployment and economic activity slows.
The eurozone economy contracted a record 7.7% this year due to the effects of a pandemic, but a US private sector laid off 20 million workers last month due to a business closure.
Some countries, such as Germany, Spain and Italy, are starting to loosen restrictions, but US President Trump says he is still focused on opening the country.
Soccer officials have also begun to consider ways to save the game, and Bundesliga, Germany, has been granted permission to resume later this month.
Fire lagging
WHO’s Mike Ryan added that it is up to the government and the sports federation to decide how and when to resume, and UN agencies will provide risk management advice when needed.
Tedross, who was largely accused by the Trump administration of responding to the outbreak, said he would value WHO’s actions once the pandemic subsided.
“I don’t think our focus should be divided during the raging fire,” he said.
Tedros also defended the WHO’s record of warnings of the possible human-to-human transmission of the new coronavirus and said it notified the world in the first half of January.
Geneva-based institutions have been accused of being “China-centric” by top US donors who cut off funding for the institutions.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompio renewed his criticism of China on Wednesday, accusing the country of the deaths caused by the outbreak and demanding that Beijing share information about the outbreak.
Tedros said the WHO, which is preparing another mission for China to discover the animal origin of the virus, treated the country like any of its 194 members.
“The rule we have at WHO and other UN agencies is when member states report what we post as is,” Tedros said.
“The most important thing is our guidance before, during, and after January 14th, which includes the potential for person-to-person transmission to help prepare countries.” Added.
