West Nile virus first detected in the state this year – Boston Herald
The West Nile virus was first detected in Massachusetts mosquitoes this year, state public health officials said.
The virus was confirmed Thursday in a sample of mosquitoes collected in Medford on June 29, according to a State Department statement.
No human or animal cases of West Nile fever or Eastern equine encephalitis have been detected in this year’s state, and there are no increased or altered risk levels associated with this finding.
“The first WNV-infected mosquitoes of the season have always shown that it’s time to take steps to prevent mosquito bites,” Deputy Commissioner Margret Cook said in a statement. “WNV is part of the summer in Massachusetts.
