Studies have linked the milder Covid-19 to previous encounters with similar, less virulent coronaviruses.

The immune cells in question are killer T cells. The study showed that killer T cells from the most ill Covid-19 patients had less signs of previous break-in due to the cold-causing coronavirus.

When a killer T cell becomes aware of peptides that do not belong to the surface of the cell, it proliferates violently and its large number of offspring ignite and destroy the cells that carry these peptides.
Researchers have also found similar proteins made by coronavirus strains that are unique to the protein made by SARS-CoV-2 or that cause one or more (or all) common colds. A panel of 24 different peptide sequences was assembled.
