The first HIV vaccination was given to volunteers as part of an Oxford University trial.

Thirteen healthy HIV-negative adults aged 18-65 years who were not considered to be at high risk of infection received one vaccination on Monday.

This is followed by an additional boost in the next four weeks, and scientists hope it could have a significant impact on the disease.

Phase 1 clinical trials aim to evaluate the safety of vaccines and their ability to stimulate the immune system.
