Children’s wards across New Zealand are under intense pressure to care for dozens of potentially deadly babies.
Young people are usually most affected by the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Auckland’s Starship Hospital has postponed surgery to create a place for children in need of treatment for RSV, such as the flu, due to the nationwide surge in winter illness.
In addition, visitors are limited to 14 years and older to prevent the spread of infection in the hospital.
Thorsten Stanley, a pediatrics lecturer at the University of Otago, is involved in clinical trials of vaccines for pregnant women.
The potential benefits currently underway will not be in time for the peak of the season here, but can make a big difference to babies in the Northern Hemisphere when the next winter comes.
“If any of these treatments we are currently trying prove to be useful, it could save a huge number of lives in other countries where other treatments are not available.” He said.
Stanley said researchers are anxious for more people to join.
He said the vaccine showed great potential and the people in the study had a 50/50 chance of being protected or simply joining the placebo group.
