Massachusetts coronavirus cases increased by 1,410 and 138 more dead
Coronavirus cases in Massachusetts increased by 1,410 cases on Saturday, with an additional 138 deaths by the state. Eighty-five of them died in long-term care facilities that were overly damaged by the disease.
According to the Ministry of Public Health, the new deaths will bring tolls to the state’s COVID-19 toll to 4,840 people.
Currently, 76,743 highly contagious viruses have been confirmed in Massachusetts.
More than half of the state’s deaths, 2,922, have been attributed to pandemic epidemics from long-term care facilities, a major source of infection here and throughout the country.
As of Saturday, 336 long-term care centers in the state reported at least one COVID-19 case, leaving approximately 15,965 residents and health care workers sick.
Overall deaths in nursing homes and nursing homes are increasing daily, with dozens more daily this week, state data show.
As of Friday, 73 veterans who had a positive response to the coronavirus died in a pandemic at the Holy York Soldiers Home that plagued 78 inhabitants and 83 employees. At Chelsea Soldiers Home, 28 veterans who tested positive for COVID-19 were killed, and an additional 30 residents and 57 staff were infected. Earlier this week, the parent company of the Courtyard Nursing Care Center in Medford reported the death of 54 residents.
Overall, 75% of cases of coronavirus in Holyoke were transmitted from long-term care facilities, Mayor Alex Morse told Herald Friday.
“This is a high percentage in the city and reflects elsewhere,” Morse said.
The state-wide positive test rate for coronaviruses was 13% on Saturday, continuing a significant downtrend closely monitored by state and public health officials. An additional 10,514 tests were conducted, for a total of 376,537.
4% of all patients with coronavirus, or 3,229, were hospitalized and 814 were admitted to the intensive care unit, another indicator of a decline this week.
Middlesex County had the highest number of cases again with 17,307, followed by Suffolk County with 15,119.
As of Saturday afternoon, there were more than 3.9 million COVID-19 cases worldwide and more than 277,600 deaths. According to Johns Hopkins University Tracker, the United States exceeded 1.3 million and killed more than 78,000 people.
