State investigating potential hepatitis A outbreaks in Montgomery after Applebee workers test virus-positive
Authorities said Wednesday that the Alabama Public Health Service is investigating a possible outbreak of hepatitis A after food handlers in Montgomery Appleby have been tested positive for the virus.
ADPH has proposed a customer for Applebee at 3195 Taylor Rd. Identified in Montgomery between July 8th and 16th, we urge you to contact your healthcare provider, pharmacy, or Montgomery Health Department as soon as possible to obtain the hepatitis A vaccine.
Hepatitis A vaccine reduces the likelihood of illness in these customers, but immunization is only effective if given within 14 days of exposure to the virus.
“Adults with hepatitis A may have symptoms such as malaise, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, and jaundice. These symptoms usually resolve within two months of infection,” ADPH disease management said. And Dr. Bernestin Taylor, Head of Medical Care for Prevention, said in a statement. “Children under the age of 6 generally have asymptomatological or unrecognized infections. Almost everyone with hepatitis A recovers completely.”
Hepatitis A rarely causes serious illness, but people over the age of 50 and those with liver disease are at greater risk, the agency said.
Montgomery Applebees has been closed for cleaning. Authorities added that there were no violations of the facility during the recent inspection, “continuing to be very sensitive and supportive to help remedy this situation.”
